Ultra - high energy cosmic rays may come from clustered sources

چکیده
Clustering of cosmic-ray sources affects the flux observed beyond the cutoff imposed by the cosmic microwave background and may be important in interpreting the AGASA, Fly’s Eye, and HiRes data. The standard deviation, σ, in the predicted number, N , of events above 10 eV is σ/N = 0.9(r0/10Mpc) 0.9, where r0 is the unknown scale length of the correlation function (r0 ≃ 10 Mpc for field galaxies, H0 = 50 km s −1 Mpc). Future experiments will allow the determination of r0 through the detection of anisotropies in arrival directions of ∼ 10 eV cosmic-rays over angular scales of Θ ∼ r0/30 Mpc.

متن کاملUltra high energy neutrinos: the key to ultra high energy cosmic rays
We discuss the relation between the acceleration spectra of extragalactic cosmic ray protons and the luminosity and cosmological evolution of their sources and the production of ultra high energy cosmogenic neutrinos in their propagation from the sources to us.
متن کاملSignatures of Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Ray Composition from Propagation of Nuclei in Intergalactic Photon Fields
We present a calculation of nuclei propagation with energies above 1018 eV in the intergalactic photon field. The calculation is based on a Monte Carlo approach for the nucleus-photon interaction as well as the intergalactic magnetic field. We then assume that the Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECR) are nuclei which are emitted from extra-galactic point sources. Four bumps are found in the en...

متن کاملUltra-High Energy Cosmic Rays from Quasar Remnants
One of the models recently proposed to explain the origin of the ultra high energy cosmic rays assumes that these particles may be accelerated by the electromotive force around presently inactive quasar remnants. We study predictions for large and small scale ultra high energy cosmic ray arrival direction anisotropies in a scenario where the particles are injected with a mono-energetic spectrum...
